Northern Star Scout To Perform in Community Nutcracker Event December 4

Scouts Invited to Production with Backstage Tour To Help in Earning Theater Merit Badge

Youth Dance Ensemble (YDE) in Burnsville has been presenting a Community Nutcracker Event and inviting Scout troops to attend for over 15 years. The annual festive performance features south-of-the-river youth telling this holiday classic through the art of dance. This year, Northern Star Council Scout Joseph Blando will be performing the roles of Fritz and a Russian Dancer. We asked Joseph a few questions about performing and Scouts.

How long have you been in Scouts, and what troop are you with?

I have been in Scouts for seven years, and I am a Patrol Leader with Troop 207 in Rosemount.

When did you become interested in performing?

I was pretty young—eight, I think. My oldest sister was a senior in high school that year, so it was the last chance for me to do a show with all three of my siblings. I really enjoyed it, so I kept taking dance classes at YDE and performing.

Do you have a favorite style of dance, and what other activities do you enjoy?

Honestly, Scouts is probably my favorite activity. I would say my favorite style of dance is tap, but I really like musical theater, too. I also love playing drums and drawing.

Are performing and Scouts similar in any way?

Well, in both, camaraderie is a big part of it. Also, both are about being part of something bigger than yourself. And both involve setting goals and working toward them.

Is it ever hard to balance performing with Scouts?

My troop is pretty active and does a lot of campouts, which is great. Unfortunately, sometimes I have to miss a campout because of a rehearsal or performance. But I make a point to balance things, so I am able to keep up both interests. I am lucky that both my Scoutmaster and my teachers at YDE are really supportive.

The Community Nutcracker Event takes place on Saturday, December 4 at 10 a.m. at Burnsville High School’s Mraz Center. It includes a performance, cast talkback, and backstage tour for Scouts working toward their Theater Merit Badge. This event is Pay as You Are Able with a suggested donation of $5.
