Local Scout Receives National $25K Eagle Scholarship
Nikolas Liepins, an Eagle Scout from Troop 9045 chartered to Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in St Paul, was selected to receive one of four Mable and Lawrence S. Cooke Scholarships through the National Eagle Scout Association. The scholarship recognizes school and Scouting participation, academic performance, leadership, community involvement and financial need. Niko was also selected to receive one of our local Northern Star Eagle Scout scholarships.
Liepins will attend Stanford University in California will this fall on a degree path of “Science, Technology and Society”.
In Scouting, Nikolas has held a leadership position every single year and believes the real-world experiences and lessons that he’s learned will continue to benefit him throughout the rest of his life. “Leadership is key for Scouting and beyond” says Liepins. ““Just try” is the advice I give to others and has given me so many great experiences throughout my years in Scouting. I’ve learned to be more self-sufficient and help others, even in ways they might not have known they needed to be helped.”
Scouting highlights include pinewood derbies (making cars that weren't very fast but were my own unique design), troop activities and campouts, media appearances on iHeartRadio, KSTP radio and MPR representing Northern Star Scouting and being part of my troop’s leadership team as quartermaster for the World Jamboree. “Scouting with others from around the world is an experience I will never forget” Nikolas says.
